The Review Velocity Secret: How to Get 4.8+ Stars Without Violating Bar Rules

by Marilyn Jenkins | May 11, 2026 | Blog | 0 comments

The Engine of Local SEO: Velocity Over Volume

One of the biggest misconceptions in legal marketing is that the firm with the most reviews wins. In the age of AI and Google’s 2026 local algorithm, that is no longer true. What matters now is Review Velocity—the consistency and recency of your feedback.

A firm with 500 reviews that stopped collecting them six months ago is considered “stale” by Google’s Map Pack. A firm with 50 reviews that receives three new ones every week is seen as active and relevant. At Law Marketing Zone®, we prioritize velocity as a core component of your Local Authority Score (LAS).

The Ethical Guardrails: Rule 7.2 Compliance

Most attorneys are hesitant to implement review systems because they fear violating ABA Model Rule 7.2, which prohibits giving “anything of value” in exchange for a recommendation.

  • The No-Go Zone: You cannot offer a $10 Starbucks card, a discount on fees, or a “contest entry” for a review.
  • The Safe Zone: You can (and should) have a systematic process for asking satisfied clients for an honest assessment of their experience.

The “Moment of Peak Satisfaction” System

To maintain high velocity, you cannot leave reviews to chance. You need a process. We recommend a “Three-Touch” approach:

  1. The Mid-Case Check-in: Ask for feedback during a positive milestone (e.g., a successful deposition).
  2. The Closing Meeting: This is the “Moment of Peak Satisfaction.” Have a QR code on your desk or include a link in the final digital closing packet.
  3. The 30-Day Follow-up: A simple, automated email thanking them for their trust and inviting them to share their story on Google.

Keywords in Reviews: The AI Influence

When a client writes, “Marilyn was a great personal injury lawyer in Dallas,” they are doing your SEO for you. Google and AI models parse the text within reviews to confirm your practice areas and location. We teach firms how to subtly guide clients to describe their experience rather than just saying “Five stars!”

Responding: The 24-Hour Rule

Review velocity is a two-way street. Your Interaction Rate (how quickly and professionally you respond to both positive and negative reviews) is a major trust signal. A professional response to a negative review often does more for your “Trust” score than a dozen five-star ratings with no reply.

Connecting to the Blueprint

Review velocity is the fuel for your  Multi-Attorney Local Dominance Blueprint. Without a steady stream of fresh, local data from your clients, your “Digital Fortress” will eventually crumble.

While velocity is key, how you handle the occasional critique is just as important. [Read our strategy for handling 1-star reviews here].
